The wait is finally over. At last, after delaying it for three times, Fedora Project has released Fedora 24 with a bunch of new features and improvements.
As you might know, Fedora is one of the most popular Linux distro – one that Linus Torvalds, the father of Linux Kernel, uses himself. Fedora is the community project of Red Hat, the first $2 billion open source company.
Fedora 24 is just another step forward to make Linux great for users and developers, a journey that started 13 years ago. Let’s have a quick look at the main features of Fedora 24.
Fedora 24 features
Some of the new features introduced in this release of Fedora are listed below:
- Desktop Environment: Fedora 24 ships GNOME 3.20 as the default desktop environment. That means it’ll come out with all of GNOME’s latest features.
- Upgrade Process: The Software application will be able to detect and offer upgrades to the latest Fedora releases from now on. From Fedora’s official blog,
Your content downloads in the background, and when ready, you can reboot and upgrade.
And this is feature will also be pushed to Fedora 23 for a seamless upgrade to Fedora 24.
- Flatpak: Flatpak is a framework for packaging Linux desktop applications. Like Ubuntu’s Snap packaging, it works by isolating applications from each other as well as the system and modulating them in Shared Runtime, Bundled Libraries etc. In Fedora 24 Flatpak support is baked into the Software application.
- Office Suite: Fedora 24 includes LibreOffice 5.1.
- QGnomePlatform: QGnomePlatform is a project that works towards unifying GNOME and Qt applications’ visual experience. It does so by synchronizing between GNOME and Qt tools settings. So, whether the application is designed for GNOME or KDE, it will look as similar as possible.
- Wayland: Wayland is the new display technology that is supposed to replace X. It provides latest features as well as improved security and is now available on Fedora 24 for everyday usage.
- Under the hoods: Fedora 24 comes with various usability improvements. Workstation edition has some visual improvements.
The Server edition has leaned towards more modularity and ditched unnecessary packages making it more compact in size.
The Cloud edition features OpenShift Origin, a PaaS (Platform as a Service) system that makes application development and deployment easier.
Download Fedora 24

As always, Fedora Spins & Labs are also released alongside the three main editions – Workstation, Server and Cloud. Fedora Spins are what we call Flavors in the Ubuntu universe, that offer alternate desktop environments, like – KDE, Xfce, LXDE, MATE etc.
And Fedora Labs offer extensive collections of software bundled for specific purposes, like – gaming, robotics, scientific etc. Fedora images for ARM devices are also available for downloading.
If you haven’t tried Fedora yet, this might be a good time to taste it. And those who already use Fedora, hurry up and grab the latest and greatest features from Fedora 24!
Once you have downloaded Fedora 24, do check out our articles on how to create a Fedora live USB in Ubuntu and things to do after installing Fedora 24.
Does Fedora 24 support AMD graphics cards? Ubuntu 16.04 doesn’t & is pointing the finger at AMD, rather than Canonical working with them to create a solution. Not even Microsoft resorts to these lows, they send devs to assist, or will build compatible drivers for new OS’s ‘in house’.
While I’ve been a Linux Mint user for 7 years, will make a switch if version 18 (still in Beta) isn’t soon supported by AMD. I have reason to believe that the heads of Canonical with their collaboration with Microsoft, are getting too large for their own good & doing a lot of damage to the Linux brand.
Am hopeful that Fedora doesn’t employ the same strong arm tactics.

Does this distro with Wayland supports DisplayLink? (Usb display docking station)
Your Page Screen is extremely frustrating. Why on earth do you insist on locking those function Tabs (Google, Facebook, Twitter, etc) in the middle of the LEFT SIDE of the Page??????? One CANNOT move them up nor down and they ARE ALWAYS in the Way!! They always block reading the articles and leave no choice except to use ONLY the Bottom (or Top) half of the Screen??
Please CORRECT this.
Need a little Human Engineering!!!!!!!
Replied to your email as well William. Just hover the mouse over the bottom of the widget and you’ll see the option to hide it.
The upgrade process makes it seem like Fedora 24 is a Rolling Release. Is this correct?
Wasn’t that goal (rolling release) to be achieved by Fedora Rawhide?
