Jolla, a Finnish company formed by ex-Nokia employees, is all set to launch its Sailfish OS based smartphone in India. Jolla has partnered with Snapdeal (sort of Indian Groupon) for the launch. Which means Jolla smartphones will only be available online unlike the traditional retail way.
Jolla sent a tweet from its official account announcing its Indian launch:
First Jolla smartphone came in November 2013 and received mixed reviews. Priced at 349 Euro, it almost falls in high priced smartphones category. It will be interesting to see what price tag will Jolla carry in India. 349 Euro roughly amounts to 28,000 INR which is not in everyone’s reach. It will have to compete with high end Android phones in this price range.
Indian market is fragmented anyways with a huge but highly competitive smartphone market. If they put such a price, Jolla should only be able to attract the early adopters, in my opinion.
