How To Install WordPress Desktop App In Linux

WordPress Desktop Application installation in Linux

Let me clarify first. This post is not about showing you how to install WordPress in Linux. Installing WordPress for deploying a self-hosted WordPress website in local or on a server, is an entirely different process.

This post talks about installing WordPress desktop app. Like the mobile version, the desktop version gives you access to the dashboard of your WordPress.com blog. You can edit posts, write new posts, check stats etc. If you use Jetpack, you can also connect you self-hosted WordPress.org install.

I hope you understand the difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org WordPress.

WordPress.com is a blogging platform that lets you create new blogs for free. You don’t have to pay for the server cost or the domain name (unless you explicitly buy one). WordPress.org, on the other hand, is an open source software (from the same team as WordPress.com) that you can deploy on your own server with you own domain name. It’s FOSS is using self-hosted WordPress.org.

Installing WordPress desktop app in Linux

WordPress desktop app has recently been open sourced. You can get the source code from their Github repository. WordPress desktop app is available for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.

If you are using Debian or Ubuntu based distributions such as Linux Mint, elementary OS, Linux Lite etc, you can download .deb package and easily install WordPress.

For other Linux distributions such as Fedora and Arch, you can get the source code and build it on your own.

Go to the link below and download either the .deb (recommended for Ubuntu based distributions) or the .tar.gz file.

For .deb file, you can double click on it to install the application. I recommend using GDebi for installing .deb files. It’s faster and lighter than the traditional software centers. Once installed, you can search for it in Unity Dash (or look under the Menu) and start it by clicking on it:

For .tar.gz file, remember that when you extract it first (removing gz compression), you’ll need to rename the resulted file and add .tar as extension. Otherwise, you’ll get “archive type not supported error.

When you start the app for the first time, it will ask you to enter the credentials. To access the sself-hosted WordPress.org sites, there is a link on the bottom and then you need to provie credentials for Jetpack.
