In a recent article we saw the best ways to download YouTube videos in Ubuntu. In a similar post, we’ll see how to extract audio from a video file in Ubuntu and other Linux distributions.
We’ll be using 4K Video to MP3 tool for this purpose. It is not an open source application but it is free for use. It makes video to audio conversion in Linux, a matter of few clicks.
Extract audio from video in Ubuntu Linux
Since I did not find the source code of this tool, I presume that this can only be installed in Ubuntu and other Ubuntu based distributions such as Linux Mint, elementary OS, Pinguy OS etc. For this tutorial, I have used Ubuntu 14.04. You can get the .deb executable from the link below. You should look for the Download 4K Video to MP3 section and based on whether your system is 32 bit or 64 bit, download the correct installer files.
Once downloaded, double click on it to install. For faster installation, I would recommend to use gdebi as your default installer instead of Ubuntu Software Center.
Using 4 K Video to MP3
Go in Unity Dash and look for 4K Video to MP3. Start the application and you’ll see a screen asking to select a video.
As soon as you add the video, it starts converting it to audio with default preferences. It would have been better if it had a run/convert button instead of auto-conversion.
For a 1080p video of 3.5 minutes of duration, it took just 5-6 seconds to convert it into MP3 with size of around 3 MB.
The converted files are stored in 4K Video to MP3 directory created in Music. Of course, you can change the preferences to select the destination directory and output format. The available output format are MP3, M4A and OGG. You can also set the default audio quality here.
That’s it. You see how easy it is to convert videos in to audio in Linux. If you want to experiment with audio-video further, I suggest to read on how to record streaming audio in Ubuntu. You can also read about recording Skype calls in Ubuntu.
I hope you find this tutorial helpful. Stay tuned for more such articles. If you have questions or suggestions, feel free to leave a comment.
