FOSS Weekly #24.05: Zed Editor, PrivateGPT AI, CPU Temperature in Linux and More

You cannot escape AI, so embrace it perhaps?
Warp Terminal

I promised at the beginning of 2024 that you'll see more exploring, homelab and hobbyist open source AI stuff this year along with the regular beginner-friendly tutorials.

In that regard, we have our first AI article published. It is about setting up PrivateGPT AI to interact with PDF documents. It's not written by me, that's another Abhishek.

With PrivateGPT, the data remains on your system and all the computation happens on your system.

I have also received the latest Raspberry Pi 5. Be prepared to see some Raspberry Pi tutorials as well 😄

By the way, if you are on Instagram, do follow us there as we are sharing plenty of reels (not the dancing ones, don't worry 😉 )

💬 Let's see what else you get in this edition of FOSS Weekly:

  • A new Budgie release.
  • Meta is betting big on its GitHub Copilot challenger.
  • A guide on monitoring Raspberry Pi temperature.
  • The creators of Atom have come up with something new.
  • And other Linux news, videos and, of course, memes!

📰 Linux news

  • Aircove VPN router is now available to purchase in Canada.
  • Vanilla OS 2 Orchid Beta has been released for testing purposes.
  • Meta's AI-powered rival to Github's Copilot has received a major boost.
  • Budgie 10.9 was released, featuring a session manager and initial Wayland ports.

The creators of Atom have introduced a new open-source code editor. It's not available for Linux yet, though.

Escuelas (Schools) Linux is very interesting
Escuelas Linux is intended for use in a k-12 environment. I read about it in my current ZDNet newsletter This education-based Linux distro is designed for schools - and it’s free The part I find very interesting is that it provides three ways to ‘restore’ itself (see the coverage of these in the linked article) if things get bollixed up. 1. It can restore itself to its initial configuration/state, removing any user, files, or configuration changes that have been made since initial installation…
