I think it’s safe to say that VLC is one of the best media players for Linux or any other platform. There are a number of hidden features of VLC media player which you may not even know about. One such feature is desktop notification. In this quick tip, we shall see how to enable desktop notification for VLC in Ubuntu and other versions.
Enable desktop notification for VLC in Ubuntu
To enable desktop notification for VLC in Ubuntu, follow the steps below:
Step 1:
Open VLC media player. From the top menu, go to Tools and then Preferences.
VLC->Tools->Preferences
Step 2:
Check the All button in the bottom:
Step 3:
Now, from the left sidebar, choose Control interfaces. In here, check the LibNotify Notification Plugin and save it. This enables desktop notification for VLC in Ubuntu with Unity.
By default the notification appears for 4000 ms i.e. 4 seconds. You can change it under Control interfaces by selecting Notify option.
And that would be it. You can see the notification when you play an audio or video file. It will be perfectly integrated in Ubuntu environment:
I hope this quick tip helped you to use VLC in a more Ubuntu-ish fashion by enabling desktop notification. What do you say?
Since we are discussing VLC tweaks, you may want to fix the green line on VLC issue, if you encounter it frequently.
Thanks for the article ! Is it possible to view the notification with a proper thumbnail in the notification ?
I love VLC also and appreciate the tip you you provided your readers. Sometime in the near future could you do an article telling us how to stream VLC to Mediatomb. I would like to send stuff I am getting off the internet to my blu-ray player to show on my TV. Thanks
I also love VLC but only works if you have LibDvdCss2.so and LibDvdRead.so
I don’t remember installing these two libs and yet it works fine for me.
Weird but when I had Linux Mint 15 MATE (Olivia) installed I had to install Ubuntu restricted extras as well as the two listed libraries otherwise VLC refused to play and DVD except for the unencrypted copyrite warning.
Of course I installed Ubuntu restricted extra. Can’t live without it. But yes, it does require the mentioned libs to play DVDs.
Since medibuntu is no longer supported, I do:
sudo apt-get install libdvdread4 (it comes in the restricted extras) and here is the important part, at least this is what makes it work for me, I execute:sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh
It’s VLC, WTF would you want notifications for anything? It’s a video player, not a goddamn XBOX or Fuckbook device.
I would like notifications for when douche bags like you are around. If you have nothing constructive to say, then piss off. Your ignorance is like a shining beam in the darkness of a pitch black night.
