Solve Overheating Issue In Ubuntu

Update: This post is outdated. Please follow this new guide to prevent overheating in Linux laptops.

Think your laptop running on Ubuntu 12.10 is burning your balls off? Cooldown. We have a nice little app, Jupiter, that could help reducing the temperature of your notebook.

Install Jupiter in Ubuntu 12.10:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/jupiter
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install jupiter

How To Use Jupiter To Solve Over Heating Issue:

Once you have installed Jupiter, go and search for it in Unity dash:

Then from the top menu, choose Performance->Power Saving:

And then you need to do nothing. After some time you should notice an improvement in performance and your laptop less heated than before.

Jupiter has officially stopped the development. However you can still install Jupiter in Ubuntu 13.04 through unofficial PPA. Though I’ll recommend to install cpufreq or TLP in Ubuntu 13.04 and higher version to solve overheating of laptops.

  1. This helps yes, I’m running between 60/70 , which is still hot as hell.
Also have a Kworker CPU problem that only goes away when I boot the kernel with acpi=off

    • @google-19661c3cce00948216629a1682ce18d8:disqus I can understand that this app does not necessarily cools down your computer completely but it reduces it for sure.

    • Not that I notice any.. except that it notifies “Resolution changed” when you log in to Ubuntu. Its a bug and has no effect on performance whatsoever.

  1. […] Overheating of laptops in Ubuntu is a very common problem. Before Ubuntu 13.04, Jupiter was the best tool to reduce overheating and increase battery performance in Ubuntu and other Linux distributions. Couple of months before the release of Ubuntu 13.04, it was announced that Jupiter will not be developed anymore. and last Ubuntu version to get Jupiter support was Ubuntu 12.10. This came as a shock for many of Jupiter lovers and people tried lots of other alternates to Jupiter in Ubuntu 13.04 but trust me, none matched the performance of Jupiter. […]

  2. […] Jupiter, an applet originally created to work with Eee PC, was later turned in to a life saver, or I should rightly called, ‘power saver’ for many Ubuntu (and other Linux distribution based on Ubuntu) users. If you have used Ubuntu for some time you might have realized that the laptop battery on Ubuntu lasts less than half than what it is on Windows. Jupiter is the best tool to improve laptop battery life and overheating on Ubuntu. […]
