How To Fix: There is no command installed for RAR archive files

I downloaded a rar file from somewhere in internet and tried to extract it by right clicking on it and using “extract here”. Instead of extracting it, Ubuntu 14.04 throw an error in my face which read as:

There is no command installed for RAR archive files. Do you want to search for a command to open this file?

The error looked like this:

Reason is pretty straight forward and quite evident from the error itself. The RAR program is not installed. That tells us that RAR is not included by default in Ubuntu as an archive format.

Solution is even simpler. Install the RAR program. Open the terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and use the following command:

sudo apt-get install rar

Once it is installed try extracting the rar archived file again. No need to log out or reboot. It works straight afterwards.

I hope it solved your problem. Cheers :)

Same here:

Package rar is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source

E: Package 'rar' has no installation candidate
