Workspaces are a nice, neat way to organize your work. Suppose you have too many applications, windows open. Your taskbar will be cluttered and it might be difficult for you to find/move between different programs. Workspaces come handy in this situation. You can group programs in different workspaces. So, lets say you have many programming related application opened. And you are also working on documentation. You can organize them in separate workspaces. This will ease your work in a more organized way and will save some time as well as frustration.
In this quick tip, we shall see how can we create workspaces in Linux Mint with Cinnamon and how to switch between them.
Note: The article was written using Linux Mint 16 but it should be valid for other Linux Mint versions as well.
Create workspace in Linux Mint:
Creating a new workspace in Linux Mint is really easy. Just move your mouse cursor to top left corner of the screen. It will show you a screen like the one below. Just click on the + sign to create a new workspace.
The workspaces in Linux Mint are persistent. Once created, these workspaces will be always there, even after the next boot.
Switch between workspaces in Linux Mint:
Unlike Ubuntu, Linux Mint doesn’t have a workspace switcher by default. To switch between workspaces, you can simply move the cursor to top left of the screen, like you did to create a new workspace. Here you will find all the existing workspaces.
Alternatively, you can use Ctrl+Alt+Up Arrow key to bring the workspaces and then move between them using the arrow key or the mouse itself.
Delete a workspace in Linux Mint:
You can in fact create several workspaces by clicking the + sign. In case you want to delete a workspace, click on the X sign on the top right of a workspace.
I hope this quick post helped you to create workspace in Linux Mint. Do you use workspaces frequently? Let us know your views on workspaces. Meanwhile, you may also check a post on things to do after installing Linux Mint 18.
Do you know if there is there any way to switch workspaces via terminal? I’m creating a script for my day-to-day work and this is a step I need to do. Thanks

But… I move the cursor to th top left. Nothing happens. What now?
This is rather old. You could look into the settings and activate the hot corners.
Coming from Windows, I like the idea of workspaces in Mint.
is there a chance to restore all Workspaces with programs and windows after a reboot?
It’s laborious to arrange everything over and over
I don’t think that’s possible.
I’m using Ubuntu, I don’t know if in mint it will be so simple/exposed option, but there is a thing called : “save session for future logins”. What it does (in my system) is +/- what you described. When I reboot, upon starting all tasks that I was using are being created again and they go to their respective places, where they were before logging off..
It must be related to session manager.. Maybe? I’m not Linux pro. I can just say in my setup it is just “check” box that is available in “Log Out…” menu… You would need to dig a bit deeper, but I think it is possible for any linux, you just need to use *something*. Maybe it’s session manager?
My install of Mint 18 and 19 didn’t have the upper-left-corner bump. In 18 and 19, you get 4 workspaces by default and Ctrl-Alt-ArrowKey switches them left and right.
To enable the “upper-left-corner bump” in Mint 18 0r 19, go to System Settings> Hot Corners and enable to upper-left corner. Then choose the “Show all workspaces” option. Adding a delay of 2-3 seconds (200- 300 ms) decreases the opportunity of accidentally activating the action.
Thanks for all your help, hermano!
