FOSS Weekly #24.49: KDE's Own Distro, Cinnamon 6.4, OpenWrt's First Router, Bootkit Malware in Linux and More

After GNOME, KDE wants to have its own official KDE distro. Should we call it KLinux or Kinux?

After GNOME, now KDE is working on its own official Linux distribution. I always thought KDE Neon was the (un)official KDE distribution that got KDE releases before everyone else.

KDE is Making its Own Distro, and So is GNOME

📰 Linux and Open Source News

Even though the decline in desktop share is minute, Microsoft Edge is not gaining much ground on Chrome.

Is it time for open source browsers like Firefox to shine again and grab some market share? Only time will tell.

🧠 What We’re Thinking About

No need to panic. It's not that your Linux system is suddenly at risk of remote hacking. This is an advanced, proof of concept that demos that in certain conditions with a certain level of access, certain things can happen.

As a regular Linux user, keep your system updated, follow the best practices and enjoy Linux.

Nothing is bulletproof. However, it is still not a concern for panic. Just follow the best practices, and you should be fine.

💡 Quick Handy Tip

On GNOME, you can enable an on-screen keyboard. For this, go to SettingsAccessibilityTyping. Here, enable “Screen Keyboard”. Alternatively, it can be done from the top panel by clicking on the accessibility menu.

Now, on most text fields, you will get the on-screen keyboard. It can also show suggested words in a dropdown menu near the cursor when a regular physical keyboard is used.

During testing, the on-screen keyboard was not showing up when being used with Chromium-based web browsers.

FOSSers are talking about the recently introduced Ubuntu 25.04 daily builds.

Ubuntu 25.04 Daily Builds Are Now Available
Just read this article. One thing stuck out to me in it. They say there are performance improvements. Yet beneath the surface there is a whopping great change as Ubuntu 25.04 now builds all packages with an aggressive compiler optimisation level “aimed at enhancing execution speed” – and benchmarks done so far, bear that out. I’ll probably play with it in a couple months when they’ve had a chance to iron out some issues and a newer kernel is available.
