React Is No Longer Meta's Project, It Now Has Its Own Foundation

Meta has contributed React, React Native, and JSX to the newly formed React Foundation.

The modern web has many critical building blocks, and React is one of those. First open-sourced by Meta in 2013, React is a JavaScript library for building user interfaces through reusable components.

Its mobile counterpart, React Native, brings the same component model to iOS and Android. At this point, we can comfortably say that these projects are not just development tools but an essential part of the web infrastructure.

Now, the project has a new home to reflect that.

The React Foundation has officially launched at the Linux Foundation Member Summit in Napa, California. React, React Native, and the JSX specification are no longer Meta's.

They are now hosted under LF Projects, LLC, a subsidiary of the Linux Foundation, putting React alongside projects like Kubernetes and Node.js under neutral governance.

Seth Webster serves as executive director, and eight companies have joined as Platinum founding members: Huawei, Meta, Expo, Software Mansion, Vercel, Callstack, Amazon, and Microsoft.

This has been in the works for a few months. Back in October 2025, the React team announced their intent to form the foundation. The reasoning was that React had grown well beyond what any one company should own. Contributions were coming in from across the industry, and the project had simply outgrown Meta's ownership.

Worth taking into consideration is that React's technical direction will stay independent from the foundation's board. The people who actually build and maintain React will continue making the calls on that front.

As for what the React Foundation does day-to-day, three focus areas are outlined on its website. Funding maintainers is first, with direct financial support going to the developers keeping ecosystem libraries running.

Then there's education and resources, which covers tutorials, documentation, and learning content. Lastly, global accessibility to ensure React stays available to developers regardless of where they are.

The foundation will also handle React's infrastructure, including GitHub, CI, and trademarks, and will take over organizing React Conf.

Announcing this, Seth stated that:

React has become critical digital infrastructure for the modern web and beyond. By establishing the React Foundation under the Linux Foundation, we are ensuring a strong, vibrant React for decades to come – guided by open governance and shared stewardship from the global community that builds with it every day.
