Fix Touchpad Tap to Click Not Working in Linux Mint

It's annoying to find that the tap on the touchpad doesn't result in a click. Thankfully, the fix is absolutely simple.

I switched to Linux Mint from Ubuntu recently, just for experimenting. The first thing that irked me was that the touchpad click was not working. You might have faced the same issue. The cursor moves with the touchpad, click works with the touchpad buttons, but click does not work when you tap the touchpad.

The reason for touchpad click not working in Linux Mint is that it has been disabled by default. This is rather strange, why it has not been enabled by default. It is similar to the problem with edge scrolling in Ubuntu, where edge scrolling is disabled by default.

In this quick tip, I’ll show you how to enable touchpad click in Linux Mint.

Enable touchpad click in Linux Mint

If you are not new to Linux Mint, just follow this path: System Settings ⇾ Hardware ⇾ Mouse and Touchpad ⇾ Touchpad tab ⇾ Enable "Tap to Click".

If you are a complete beginner, here are the steps with screenshots to show you how to enable touchpad clicks in Linux Mint:

Press Super/Windows key or click on the start button to get the start menu. Here, click on the System Settings icon:

Select System settings from the Linux Mint start menu. You can use the super key or Windows key to get the start menu.
Select System Settings

In System Settings, go to the Hardware section and select Mouse and Touchpad:

In System Settings, scroll down to the Hardware section. Here select the Mouse and Touchpad item from the grid menu.
Select "Mouse and Touchpad" icon

In here, go to the Touchpad tab and enable the Tap to Click option. Remember, you still need to press the touchpad button to enable the toggle button.

Toggle on the Tap to Click in the Touchpad tab.
Enable Tap to click

Voilà! No need to even restart or anything. Touchpad click will start working straightforward. I hope that helps. Any questions or suggestions are welcome. Stay tuned for more Linux Mint tutorials. Ciao 😃
