Great News! Linus Torvalds is Back in Charge of Linux

Good news Linux folks. Linus Torvalds is back in charge of Linux.

To refresh your memory a bit, a few weeks back Linus Torvalds announced that he is taking some time off from Linux Kernel development to improve his behavior.

This announcement came right after he signed off the controversial Linux code of conduct.

He was scheduled to speak at the Open Source Summit in Edinburgh but his talk was removed after he took the sudden temporary break.

Greg Kroah-Hartman took the command of Linux Kernel development in his absence. Greg announced the release of Linux Kernel 4.19 today.

He ended the release announcement email with:

Linus, I’m handing the kernel tree back to you. You can have the joy of dealing with the merge window :)

Linus Torvalds is back in charge of Linux

Linus Torvalds is already here in Edinburgh but he won’t be attending any public event in the Open Source Summit. However, he will attend the Linux Kernel Maintainer Summit happening at the same time in Edinburgh.

Linux Kernel Maintainer Summit is a different type of event. World’s top 30-40 Linux Kernel developers are invited for this summit and the event is not open to public. Torvalds is meeting these top kernel developers in Edinburgh.

Linus Torvalds has not replied to the mailing list yet but it seems likely that he will take charge of the kernel development again. The next kernel version will be 5.0 instead of 4.20 and I guess we can safely say that it will be announced by Torvalds himself.

It remains to be seen whether Linus Torvalds has improved his behavior and become a gentler person or not.
