Nikola Tesla would have been proud if he was alive today. Leading electric car manufacturer Tesla Motors announced that all of its patented technologies will be available for anyone to use, specifically to its competitors.
In the words of Elon Musk, CEO Tesla Motors, this move is “in the spirit of the open source movement, for the advancement of electric vehicle technology”. In his blog post titled All Our Patent Are Belong To You, Elon sighted that most of the vehicle manufacturers are shy of electric vehicles and “open sourcing” the patents will motivate them.
At Tesla, however, we felt compelled to create patents out of concern that the big car companies would copy our technology and then use their massive manufacturing, sales and marketing power to overwhelm Tesla. We couldn’t have been more wrong. The unfortunate reality is the opposite: electric car programs (or programs for any vehicle that doesn’t burn hydrocarbons) at the major manufacturers are small to non-existent, constituting an average of far less than 1% of their total vehicle sales.
Tesla Motors has several patents related to charging, battery and power consumption. While making the patents available for all would mean more competition for Tesla Motors, it would also boost the overall production of electric cars.
Does it mean, we shall be seeing cheaper electric cars in near future? Can’t say that but there will be more electric cars for sure. What you think of Tesla Motors’s move?
