I don’t remember that how many times I formatted my home PC or Laptop mistakenly. I remember once I lost 80 GB of lectures and some 14 Linux distributions ISOs by deleting my Linux partition. I recovered them using another program but this time let’s use Stellar Phoenix to recover my previously deleted Linux partitions.
Stellar Phoenix is a data recovery program for Windows to recover lost data from Linux partitions. Stellar Phoenix asked It’s FOSS to review their Linux data recovery product and here I have tasted it to recover my data from a deleted Linux partitions.
Before we see how well it performed, I must inform you that we have one free copy of this premium software to giveaway (look at the end of the article).
Stellar Phoenix Linux Data Recovery
You can download Stellar Phoenix from their official website. There are two editions ‘Soho‘ and ‘Technician‘. Soho is for home users who need to recover Linux partitions or data from Linux partitions.
There are two versions under ‘Soho’, Linux Data Recovery and Linux Data Recovery Bundle. In addition to Linux data recovery version, Bundle provides three more features, Bundle version can recover lost data or partitions from XFS volumes, supports all latest version of SUSE Linux and recovers formatted XFS volumes.
Technician is mostly for the tech who provide data recovery services. Technician versions can recover data not only from Linux partitions but also from Windows and Mac partitions.
‘Soho’ versions cost $79 and $100 and ‘Technician’ versions cost $199 and $500. For me price are just good because you only need to pay once. No headache to pay monthly or yearly.
Download and install
For trying, you can download a trial version from here. The trial version allows you to do everything that the full version can do but it will not recover files until you don’t provide Username and License key. The trial version is good to see the performance and accuracy.
In this review, I am using Soho Linux Data Recover edition. After you have downloaded and purchased a license, just double click the setup and follow the simple next, next, next and finish wizard :). Very easy to install!
Launch from the start menu after you have installed. The application is pretty easy to use. All options are appearing on the main window.
Stellar Phoenix gives main options over the main window for drive recovery, CD/DVD Recovery and Photo recovery.
Drive recovery recovers the deleted Linux partitions or data from existing partitions. CD/DVD recovery allows to recover data out of a damaged CD/DVD. Third option is the best for people need to recover all images/photos from either existing partitions or from the complete hard drive.
Move on to the next tab, Recover from image. In case you opted to recover data in any of the above method and you had to turn off your laptop or PC then you can save image of the recovery. This is pretty helpful feature, you don’t need to scan hard drive again and again. Run the scan once, and save the image and use it from this tab later on.
The third tab ‘Advance Options’ allows to make images of the current drives. You can create image of any existing partition or the complete hard drive. This option is helpful while backing up data. You can create image once, and restore it if needed in future.
The software can be really helpful for professional use. People mostly need to recover their lost Linux partitions and photos. As I mentioned I lost my Linux partition that had more than 10 Linux distributions’ iso images. So I will now recover my lost partitions.
Step – 1 (Recover Deleted Linux Partitions)
I used Data Recovery option from the first tab and it gave me two options.
I wanted to recover partition first of all so I selected my hard disk. There are two ways to recover, quick and deep scan. First I recommend ‘Quick’. It works fine and recovers all recently deleted Linux partitions. When I started quick scan for lost partitions, software gave me three partitions within first two minutes. The complete process took about 56 minuites and found 33 deleted partitions. I like the work. I got every recently deleted partitions. It scanned very well.
Step – 2 (Save Files & Folders)
I selected one of the listed partitions and click recovered.
I found that there were exactly the same directories that I had in my Linux partition. As you can see ‘linuxandubuntu’ was my home folder and my Linux distros folder is also there. I found approximately everything that was there at the time I mistakenly deleted partition. Other than this Stellar Phoenix allows me to apply filters to recover specific type of files, for example .jpg .png or office documents etc. before saving process.
To sum it up, Stellar Phoenix Linux Data Recovery gets the job done, with added benefit of ‘recovery from image’. On the down side, it takes some time in process and costs you money. But all similar data recovery software are priced in the same range, Stellar Phoenix is not alone.
- Stellar Phoenix does not need to save/mount partition before saving data.
- Scanning deleted partition is super fast.
- Recovered all files without damaging them.
- Slow in saving files from deleted Linux partitions
