📋

TLDR;
\- Modular laptop manufacturer Framework became a Gold tier sponsor of Hyprland project.
\- Hyprland lead dev, [Vaxry, was earlier banned from contributing to freedesktop](https://blog.vaxry.net/articles/2024-fdo-and-redhat?ref=itsfoss.com) because of the way moderation takes place in Hyprland's Discord server.
\- This also makes left-leaning people not like the Hyprland project.
\- Framework's X account tweeted a joke that Omarchy Linux (created by [DHH](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David%5FHeinemeier%5FHansson?ref=itsfoss.com)) is the Windows 11 replacement.
\- This further infuriated people who don't like DHH and his right-leaning views.
\- And thus Framework's community forum became a place for heated discussion.

[Framework](https://frame.work/?ref=itsfoss.com), the maker of modular laptops, [announced](https://x.com/FrameworkPuter/status/1975925109647987101?ref=itsfoss.com) on October 8 that it has become a Gold tier sponsor of [Hyprland](https://hypr.land/?ref=itsfoss.com), the popular Wayland compositor that offers an eyecandy experience for Linux users.

This was shared alongside the news that they had joined the [Linux Foundation](https://www.linuxfoundation.org/?ref=itsfoss.com) and become possibly the first corporate sponsor of [Linux Vendor Firmware Service](https://fwupd.org/?ref=itsfoss.com) (*LFVS*), with the company hinting at more sponsorship announcements in the near future.

## Unhappiness over Hyprland sponsorship

![a post on framework's discourse forum that is titled, "framework supporting far-right racists?"](https://itsfoss.com/content/images/2025/10/framework-discourse-post-anarcat.png)

Shortly after the announcement, [a thread appeared](https://community.frame.work/t/framework-supporting-far-right-racists/75986?ref=itsfoss.com) on Framework's community forum titled "***Framework supporting far-right racists?***" The thread raised questions about the sponsorship, noting that Hyprland's lead developer, Vaxry, was previously banned from freedesktop.org.

The original poster asked Framework to clarify its position on human rights and equality, expressing concern about the company's decision to financially support the project.

Framework CEO [Nirav Patel](https://www.linkedin.com/in/nrpframework/?ref=itsfoss.com) responded in the thread, explaining the company's approach to open source sponsorships. He stated that they "*deliberately create a big tent*" because they want open source software to win and that they don't partner with individuals and organizations based on their beliefs, values, or political stances.

**Of course there is another aspect to what's transpired**.

Earlier that day, when they announced the Hyprland sponsorship, Framework had [put out a post](https://x.com/FrameworkPuter/status/1975721241345728683?ref=itsfoss.com) supporting [Omarchy](https://omarchy.org/?ref=itsfoss.com), a Linux configuration project created by David Heinemeier Hansson (*DHH*). The post compared Omarchy to the infamous [Windows XP product key meme](https://www.reddit.com/r/windows/comments/xirm85/i%5Fcertainly%5Fremember/?ref=itsfoss.com) that's become a well-known tech culture joke at this point.

Now, DHH is known for not 'mincing his words' when it comes to opinions and hence he is often termed a right-winger. Combined with the Hyprland announcement, **this tweet made many people question Framework's intentions and sponsorship motivations**.

If you were wondering, the forum thread remains very active with ongoing discussion (*1300+ replies*). However, the original poster (*anarcat*) and Nirav have more or less established their positions on the matter. The broader open source community continues to debate Framework's approach to sponsorships.
