[Fedora](https://fedoraproject.org/?ref=itsfoss.com) is a well-known Linux distribution that is recognized for its robustness and reliability, providing its users with a cutting-edge experience, but in a stable form and with effortless upgrades.

It is available in many flagship Editions, such as *Workstation*, *Server*, *CoreOS*, etc., with many Spins offering different [desktop environments](https://itsfoss.com/what-is-desktop-environment/) (DE) options like *Xfce*, *LxQt*, *Cinnamon*, etc., and a line of [Atomic Desktops](https://itsfoss.com/fedora-atomic-desktops/).

Since 2007, with the release of Fedora 7, [GNOME](https://www.gnome.org/?ref=itsfoss.com) has been the default desktop environment for Workstation. But, as things stand, **the status quo is set to change** with a new Edition joining Fedora Workstation.

## Fedora KDE Plasma Spin Goes Big: What To Expect?

Just a stand in screenshot of the Fedora 41 KDE Plasma spin.

There was a time when [KDE Plasma](https://kde.org/plasma-desktop/?ref=itsfoss.com) was included with the flagship releases of Fedora. However, starting with the release of Fedora 7, GNOME became the default desktop, and KDE Plasma was transitioned into a separate [Spin](https://fedoraproject.org/spins/kde?ref=itsfoss.com).

In early 2024, there was a [change proposal](https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/FedoraPlasmaWorkstation?ref=itsfoss.com) by the [Fedora KDE SIG](https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/SIGs/KDE?ref=itsfoss.com) to make KDE Plasma the default desktop experience for Fedora Workstation, moving GNOME into a separate Spin/Edition. But that did not go through.

Instead, after a lot of discussion, [another change was made](https://pagure.io/Fedora-Council/tickets/issue/504?ref=itsfoss.com).

Now, **a dedicated Fedora KDE Plasma flagship Edition is set to be introduced with the upcoming Fedora 42 release**, bringing the KDE Plasma spin on the same status as GNOME-equipped Fedora Workstation edition.

As you can see above, when launched, **the KDE Plasma Edition would be treated the same as the Fedora Workstation Edition**, receiving a dedicated page on the Fedora website, and being given the same amount of marketing support at events.

Personally speaking, **I am excited about this**, as I had a thought of trying Fedora with KDE Plasma (but I did not go for the spin). This move could also entice more Windows users into switching to Linux, if GNOME wasn't appealing enough, especially those who are on the fence after the recent [Recall shenanigans](https://itsfoss.com/microsoft-windows-creepy-ai-move/).

*💬 This was a rather unexpected move that I agree with. What do you think?*
