The rights of people around the world are being eroded, and certain governments and [Big Tech](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big%5FTech?ref=itsfoss.com) organizations are convinced that the public's data is their data.

However gloomy things might look right now, there's always a ray of hope. Two community-driven organizations have come together to stand up against such injustices by coming up with a new celebration.

## DI.DAY: What's It All About?

Digital Independence Day, or [DI.DAY](https://di.day/?ref=itsfoss.com) (*in Deutsche*) for short, is a monthly movement that encourages people to ditch Big Tech services and [switch to privacy-respecting alternatives](https://itsfoss.com/improve-privacy/).

The initiative was launched at the ***39th Chaos Communication Congress*** (39C3) by [Save Social](https://savesocial.eu/?ref=itsfoss.com) and the [Chaos Computer Club](https://www.ccc.de/en/?ref=itsfoss.com) late last year. German author and satirist [Mark-Uwe Kling](https://marcuwekling.de/en/?ref=itsfoss.com) delivered the [launch speech](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t8cTQnB6leI&ref=itsfoss.com), calling on people to reclaim social media and personal communication from corporate monopolies.

**What makes DI.DAY different** from other digital rights campaigns is its recurring nature. Instead of being a one-off event, it **happens every first Sunday of the month**. This gives people breathing space to make gradual changes to their digital lives without feeling overwhelmed.

The next Digital Independence Day is happening on **March 1, 2026**. Communities across Europe are organizing meetups, workshops, and switch parties to help people make the transition.

Some groups are hosting "*de-Google your phone*" sessions, while others are running workshops on setting up [Nextcloud](https://termine.di.day/events/2aa44ff2-9b4f-448a-bbbe-454f76498da8?ref=itsfoss.com) and [Linux install](https://termine.di.day/events/883f990e-dd34-4b09-8da4-cf9d3f18cb0b?ref=itsfoss.com) parties.

The DI.DAY organizers are also providing [recipes](https://di.day/category/rezepte/?ref=itsfoss.com) to make the process of moving away from Big Tech easier for people who are on the fence about switching.

We got to know about this thanks to [Tuta](https://tuta.com/blog/digital-independence-day?ref=itsfoss.com), who have partnered with the Digital Independence Day initiative to encourage Europeans to be more proactive in their digital lives.
