After this article was published, it came to our notice that the [developer has mentioned](https://github.com/home-sweet-gnome/dash-to-panel/issues/2274?ref=itsfoss.com#issuecomment-2752781941) that he may continue working on it.

[GNOME extensions](https://itsfoss.com/best-gnome-extensions/) are a distinctive part of the GNOME experience on many Linux installations. These extend the functionality of the desktop environment according to a user's needs and preferences.

Personally, I use several extensions, such as [Blur my Shell](https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/3193/blur-my-shell/?ref=itsfoss.com), [Tiling Shell](https://itsfoss.com/tiling-shell-gnome-extension/), [Weather O'Clock](https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/5470/weather-oclock/?ref=itsfoss.com), and a few others, for optimizing my work setup to present me with relevant information and utility when required.

According to a recent report, though, there is some concerning development regarding one of the most popular GNOME extensions, [Dash to Panel](https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/1160/dash-to-panel/?ref=itsfoss.com), where the situation has evolved into a walkout by the lead developer.

## Is Dash to Panel's Future at Risk?

**Dash to Panel running on* [**Ubuntu 24.04*](https://itsfoss.com/ubuntu-24-04-lts/)**.*

[Charles Gagnon](https://github.com/charlesg99?ref=itsfoss.com), the lead developer of the Dash to Panel project, has sent out a post on [GitHub](https://github.com/home-sweet-gnome/dash-to-panel/issues/2274?ref=itsfoss.com) announcing that **he will be stepping down from his role** and was looking for a replacement who could take over.

This move is most likely due to the conflict that emerged after a new fund-raising approach involving an animated heart icon with a donation message was [not received well](https://github.com/home-sweet-gnome/dash-to-panel/issues/2259?ref=itsfoss.com) by many users, including the [original creator](https://github.com/home-sweet-gnome/dash-to-panel/issues/2259?ref=itsfoss.com#issuecomment-2711841783) of Dash to Panel.

It quickly turned into **a two-sided spat**, with one side agreeing with the fund-raising effort and the other viewing it as an intrusive addition to their beloved extension. Even though the donation nudge has since [been removed](https://github.com/home-sweet-gnome/dash-to-panel/commit/097750f67db41cca905557ef34dad658bfd7a382?ref=itsfoss.com), the debate is still ongoing in the project's GitHub repository.

Looking forward, if a new qualified lead developer steps in, then it would be a great thing for the project. On the other hand, **a fork might gain traction**, making users move away from Dash to Panel.

Only time will tell how this situation turns out. 🫤
