[Running Windows applications on Linux](https://itsfoss.com/use-windows-applications-linux/) is made easy with tools like Wine and [Proton](https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton?ref=itsfoss.com). However, there is another popular pick that has earned acceptance by many people for general, business, and gaming use cases.

[CrossOver](https://www.codeweavers.com/crossover?ref=itsfoss.com) is a paid tool that allows people to run Windows applications on Linux and macOS. We call it '[the premium Wine](https://itsfoss.com/crossover-review/)' as it relies heavily on [Wine](https://www.winehq.org/?ref=itsfoss.com) for providing a unique product, with many open source and some proprietary components in the mix.

It is the work of CodeWeavers, who have been the driving force behind CrossOver. **Many of the firm's developers also play a major role in Wine and other open source projects**.

A [new announcement](https://www.codeweavers.com/blog/mjohnson/2025/3/11/experience-next-level-gaming-on-mac-with-crossover-25?ref=itsfoss.com) sees them roll out the CrossOver 25 release.

## 🆕 CrossOver 25: What's New?

Gamers who prefer [Steam](https://store.steampowered.com/?ref=itsfoss.com) for their gaming needs can rejoice, as CrossOver 25 offers faster startup time for it, making app launches quicker than before. There is now also support for the [GOG GALAXY](https://www.gog.com/galaxy?ref=itsfoss.com) and [Epic Games Store](https://store.epicgames.com/en-US/download?ref=itsfoss.com) clients on macOS.

Next up is the **new configuration system** for games, allowing gamers to stop worrying about using game-specific [CrossTies](https://support.codeweavers.com/crosstie-data-startpage/crosstie-data-startpage?ref=itsfoss.com) or manually configuring the game. The new “*Auto*” mode under the “*Advanced Settings*” section in *Graphics* makes CrossOver decide which graphics API translation layer to use between *WineD3D*, *DXMT*, DXVK, and *D3DMetal (part of* [*Game Porting Toolkit*](https://www.applegamingwiki.com/wiki/Game%5FPorting%5FToolkit?ref=itsfoss.com)*)*.

Seeing as we are on that topic, people on macOS can now take advantage of the newly added [DXMT](https://github.com/3Shain/dxmt?ref=itsfoss.com) support, which is meant to be **an alternative to the existing D3DMetal implementation**, making way for a [Metal](https://developer.apple.com/metal/?ref=itsfoss.com)\-based implementation of [D3D11](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Direct3D?ref=itsfoss.com#Direct3D%5F11).

In their testing, the CrossOver developers found that **DXMT worked well with lower-spec Mac devices**, while some games also performed better when compared to D3DMetal.

Moving on, **support for Windows games has been expanded** for both Linux and macOS. Some highlights include:

- [Avowed](https://avowed.obsidian.net/?ref=itsfoss.com)
- [Far Cry 6](https://store.ubisoft.com/us/far-cry-6/5ecd2c925cdf9a1528a8c1d1.html?lang=en%5FUS&ref=itsfoss.com)
- [Teardown](https://teardowngame.com/?ref=itsfoss.com)
- [Fallout 76](https://fallout.bethesda.net/en/games/fallout-76?ref=itsfoss.com)

- [Red Dead Redemption 2](https://www.rockstargames.com/reddeadredemption2?ref=itsfoss.com)

There are many tooling changes, too, such as [Wine 10.0](https://itsfoss.com/wine-10-release/), [vkd3d 1.14](https://gitlab.winehq.org/wine/vkd3d/-/releases/vkd3d-1.14?ref=itsfoss.com), D3DMetal 2.1, [Wine Mono 9.4.0](https://github.com/wine-mono/wine-mono/releases/tag/wine-mono-9.4.0?ref=itsfoss.com), and [MoltenVK 1.2.10](https://github.com/KhronosGroup/MoltenVK/releases/tag/v1.2.10?ref=itsfoss.com).
