It's not surprising though, as Linux powers everything from cloud infrastructure to embedded systems, serving as the backbone for critical infrastructure worldwide. Attacks targeted at the platform range from sophisticated [AI-written malware](https://www.theregister.com/2026/01/20/voidlink%5Fai%5Fdeveloped/?ref=itsfoss.com) to [run-of-the-mill crypto scams](https://itsfoss.com/news/snap-store-under-siege/). Luckily, most times such breaches are usually caught and dealt with appropriately. So, why was I yapping about all that? Well, the creator of systemd, [Lennart Poettering](https://0pointer.net/blog/?ref=itsfoss.com), has teamed up with some fellow open source developers to start [Amutable](https://amutable.com/?ref=itsfoss.com), a Linux security-focused outfit. ## What's Happening? ![a cropped screenshot of the amutable website that shows a lot of text describing the company's goals](https://itsfoss.com/content/images/2026/01/amutable-website-cropped-screenshot.png) Operating out of Berlin, Germany, Amutable looks to "*bring determinism and verifiable integrity to Linux systems*," focusing on building a secure foundation. The leadership is made up of [Christian Brauner](https://www.linkedin.com/in/christian-brauner/?ref=itsfoss.com) as the CTO, [Chris Kühl](https://www.linkedin.com/in/chrskhl/?ref=itsfoss.com) acting as the CEO, and Lennart Poettering being the Chief Engineer. Supporting them is **a team of experienced open source developers** who have worked on the Linux kernel, Debian, Fedora, Ubuntu, SUSE, [Kubernetes](https://linuxhandbook.com/courses/kubernetes/?ref=itsfoss.com), LXC, Incus, and a few other projects. Announcing this move over on [Mastodon](https://mastodon.social/@blixtra@hachyderm.io/115967939372638287?ref=itsfoss.com), Chris said that he was: > Very excited to be founding @Amutable with [@pid\_eins](https://mastodon.social/@pid%5Feins?ref=itsfoss.com) and [@brauner](https://mastodon.social/@brauner?ref=itsfoss.com). We are joined by one of the strongest Linux teams I could imagine building important foundational technologies that enable whole new capabilities built on trust and integrity. ## What to Expect? The company says that it is taking a different approach to Linux security, one where **proactive measures are built into systems from the start** rather than relying on [reactive threat detection](https://enhanced.io/blog/proactive-vs-reactive-threat-detection-why-msps-need-both?ref=itsfoss.com#:~:text=This%20is%20the%20response.%20It%20kicks%20in%20once%20an%20alert%20or%20known%20event%20has%20occurred%20%E2%80%93%20malware%20is%20detected%2C%20an%20endpoint%20is%20compromised%2C%20or%20a%20cloud%20misconfiguration%20is%20exploited.%20Reactive%20detection%20focuses%20on%20responding%20quickly%20and%20effectively%20to%20minimize%20damage.). The team says they will be [working on building the foundations for verification](https://amutable.com/blog/introducing-amutable?ref=itsfoss.com) over the coming months, with more capabilities to be added on top of that subsequently. They put it like this: > Integrity should be built into every critical infrastructure project. And an organization’s developer and operational teams should be able to meet trust and compliance goals as a natural result of good tooling and architecture, not as a burdensome detour. > Amutable will define that missing picture and replace heuristics with rigor. Over the coming months, we’ll be pouring foundations for verification and building robust capabilities on top. **That's not all**.
