Formerly known as [Serpent OS](https://itsfoss.com/serpent-os-alpha/), the Ikey Doherty-led Linux distribution project has gone through an [extensive rebranding process](https://aerynos.com/blog/2025/02/14/evolve-this-os/?ref=itsfoss.com), where they ditched the serpentine branding for a more elegant [AerynOS](https://aerynos.com/?ref=itsfoss.com) name that symbolizes the project's Irish roots.

Personally speaking, I really liked the earlier branding, with its minimal blacked-out look, but I understand why they moved away from it. Not everyone is comfortable with a [danger noodle](https://tenor.com/view/snake-cute-snake-cute-animated-snake-blep-blep-snake-gif-25442535?ref=itsfoss.com). 🐍

To mark this change, the AerynOS developers have introduced the very first release with the updated branding.

🚧

This is an under-development operating system that's not meant for production or general use.

## AerynOS 2025.03: What to Expect?

![aerynos 2025.03 running on a virtual machine, showing the fastfetch output and the quick settings panel being open](https://itsfoss.com/content/images/2025/03/aerynos-2025-03-fastfetch-output.jpg)

[**Fastfetch*](https://itsfoss.com/fine-control-fastfetch/) *output of AerynOS 2025.03.*

The most obvious change is the new moniker and the purple hue that distinguishes this [independent Linux distro](https://itsfoss.com/independent-linux-distros/?ref=news.itsfoss.com) from its predecessor. Even though the developers have been busy these past few weeks with the rebranding effort, this hasn't stopped them from working on the distro and the surrounding infrastructure.

With the 2025.03 release, they have introduced [*os-info*](https://github.com/AerynOS/os-info?ref=itsfoss.com) which generates system metadata in a structured format (*JSON*), greatly improving OS identification by including a description of AerynOS, the details of all the technologies involved, and their capabilities.

For you as the end-user, this results in better integration with software that relies on such data. Not to mention, this improves the transparency factor of AerynOS as well.

**The* [**lichen-installer*](https://github.com/AerynOS/lichen-installer?ref=itsfoss.com) *in action.*

Similarly, **work on revamping lichen-installer has begun**, introducing new features like better partitioning support (*via* [*disks-rs*](https://github.com/AerynOS/disks-rs?ref=itsfoss.com)) and improved error handling. These updates aim to make the installation process for AerynOS smoother and more reliable.

The infrastructure for AerynOS also sees some changes. Now, the old Serpent OS URLs are redirected to the new website, the package repositories have been moved to [*packages.aerynos.dev*](https://packages.aerynos.dev/?ref=itsfoss.com) for the unstable presync repos and [*packages.aerynos.com*](https://packages.aerynos.com/?ref=itsfoss.com) for the user-facing repos, and the documentation is now being hosted over at [*aerynos.dev*](https://aerynos.dev/?ref=itsfoss.com).

AerynOS 2025.03 also features **updated software and tooling** that include:

- [Linux kernel 6.13.8](https://lore.kernel.org/lkml/2025032206-pastor-flaxseed-9994@gregkh/T/?ref=itsfoss.com)
- [GNOME 48](https://itsfoss.com/gnome-48-release/)
- [Mesa 25.0.2](https://docs.mesa3d.org/relnotes/25.0.2.html?ref=itsfoss.com)
- [LLVM 19.1.7](https://discourse.llvm.org/t/llvm-19-1-7-released/84062?ref=itsfoss.com)
- [Firefox 136.0.2](https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/136.0.2/releasenotes/?ref=itsfoss.com)
- [Vulkan SDK 1.4.309.0](https://www.khronos.org/news/archives/lunarg-releases-vulkan-sdk-1.4.309.0?ref=itsfoss.com)

## Getting AerynOS

🚧

The project is under heavy development and should not be used on your main system.

The [official website](https://aerynos.com/download/?ref=itsfoss.com) hosts the latest AerynOS ISO, where there is only a GNOME Edition download available. Though, when I tried installing this, I also had the option to install [COSMIC](https://itsfoss.com/cosmic-alpha-5/). I'm fairly certain that more flavors with different desktop environments will be added in the future.

**Existing Serpent OS users** can migrate to AerynOS by running the following command:

```
sudo moss sync -u
```

If you face any issues, then you can ask for help on AerynOS's [Matrix](https://matrix.to/?ref=itsfoss.com#/#aerynos:matrix.org) space. On the other hand, if you are interested in contributing, then you should visit the [GitHub](https://github.com/AerynOS?ref=itsfoss.com) project page.
