Severity: normal

Hi,

Debian XSF would like to remove these obsolete input and video drivers
from Debian:

xserver-xorg-input-aiptek
xserver-xorg-input-elographics
xserver-xorg-input-mtrack
xserver-xorg-input-mutouch
xserver-xorg-input-void

xserver-xorg-video-ast
xserver-xorg-video-geode
xserver-xorg-video-mach64
xserver-xorg-video-neomagic
xserver-xorg-video-r128
xserver-xorg-video-savage
xserver-xorg-video-siliconmotion
xserver-xorg-video-sisusb
xserver-xorg-video-tdfx
xserver-xorg-video-trident

They are either unmaintained upstream or provide no value to the
distribution.

Hi, drop these from the list:

xserver-xorg-input-mtrack: not maintained by XSF :)

xserver-xorg-video-geode: apparently still useful on Debian

Note that the package(s) have simply been removed from the tag
database and may (or may not) still be in the pool; this is not a bug.
The package(s) will be physically removed automatically when no suite
references them (and in the case of source, when no binary references
it). Please also remember that the changes have been done on the
master archive and will not propagate to any mirrors until the next
dinstall run at the earliest.

Packages are usually not removed from testing by hand. Testing tracks
unstable and will automatically remove packages which were removed
from unstable when removing them from testing causes no dependency
problems. The release team can force a removal from testing if it is
really needed, please contact them if this should be the case.

We try to close bugs which have been reported against this package
automatically. But please check all old bugs, if they were closed
correctly or should have been re-assigned to another package.

Thank you for reporting the bug, which will now be closed. If you
have further comments please address them to 955603@bugs.debian.org.

The r128 driver is actually required for older Apple hardware and
there was just a user reporting a missing video driver on his
iMac.

Would there be any problems if I maintained the driver myself if
necessary?

Please keep these drivers. They work as just fine, and many people still use them. They have not been dropped by upstream X.org, and there is no reason to drop them from Debian. Without these drivers, it will make running Debian desktop on this hardware impossible. One of the things that makes Debian great is the backward compatibility. It's very sad to see destructive actions like this being taken. Please don't just throw away all the work that people have put into these drivers over the years, and please don't orphan their users!

The removal was already done over 2 weeks ago. At this point an interested party would have to package them and get them back in.

[This is not a rant]

Quick question, how has this list been generated? r128 has been
(suprisingly) been worked on recently, so I am just curious, if there
was some build issue or something else.

Thanks

Hi,

the neomagic and the mach64/r128 drivers are used in many, many
Thinkpads from the Pentium 2-3 area (up to X21/A22p P3/1GHz with 512 MB
RAM). Additionally, the ATI ones were used as simple graphic chips on
servers. Even today, lots of these machines are used.

Best regards,
Michael Fritscher

No, the hw is just 20+ years old and while there have been some
janitorial work upstream a few years ago, it's not like the driver has
gained any new functionality.
