How To Use The Unity Preview Feature In Ubuntu 12.10 [Quick Tip]

If you were following the news recently, you might be aware of the newest and one of the most talked about feature in upcoming Ubuntu 12.10: Unity Preview. Earlier when you searched for anything in Ubuntu Unity Dash, it had only one option, to be opened in its default application. What I mean if the searched item was a music file it would open in the default music player. If it relates to web, it would open in the default web browser.

But this Unity Preview gives you a brand new option to you and that is, as the name suggests, to preview the searched item. If it is an application, the Unity Preview will show the information from Ubuntu Software Center. So you don’t need to open the Software Center itself.

In the example below I searched for Wall in Unity Dash. I was provided with several options:

  • To preview a searched item, right click on it.
  • To move between searched items, use the arrow buttons reflected on the screen
  • To go out of the preview and back to the previous screen, just click anywhere on the screen except the clickable buttons.
